A 1 Day Workshop for First Responders (Developed and Delivered by a former First Responder)

I am a former First Responder and I currently work as Registered Psychotherapist speacializing in working with First Responders struggling with Occupational Stress Injuries and PTSD. While this work is invaluable, it has become evident that the demand for clinical support far outweighs the resources currently available to First Responders.

In response to this ongoing crises, I have developed a resiliency program, entitled Thrive. Thrive is designed specifically for First Responders and is based on my professional experience in law enforcement, my academic training, and my clinical work in the First Responding community. Thrive is a revolutionary program, created for First Responders, delivered by a First Responder.

Slideshow
20 years into my policing career, after going through a contentious divorce, and the death of both of my parents, I thought that I could handle anything that life could throw at me and then I was diagnosed with PTSD. I believed on some level that I was invincible… [as] I sat and talked with other First Responders (other “tough guys” and “problem solvers”) [their] stories mirrored mine: stress, dedication to work and family, a need for perfection from ourselves and those around us, an inflated sense of self-importance and ultimately some sort of organizational betrayal…[through working with Kel], I have learned so many lessons and skills that have improved my life, my perspectives, and my relationships. Not everyday is a good day but everyday is not a bad day anymore. PTSD literally saved my life because it brought me to a place where I learned life altering lessons through therapy and self awareness.

Before working with Kel, I was a person who I didn’t know anymore: my wife didn’t like me and my kids didn’t know me. Through her understanding, knowledge, and challenging, I am getting back to the man I used to be before the uniform. Kel I am forever grateful.

I have been seeing Michaela for the past 5 years and I have learned so much about myself. Michaela is welcoming, non-judgmental, and my sessions with her have taught me many skills that have been extremely beneficial to my life. Since applying some of the things I have learned with Michaela, I have found a freer version of myself.

Everyone can agree that times are changing. Gone are the days to "suck it up" or "be tough". Today's definition of tough is facing and dealing with our demons. We have a right to a good life also.

Michaela, as a First Responder herself, immediately understood my language, my struggles, and the work that I needed to do because she had been where I was. I was surrounded by a community that were fighting the same battles and are still there to let me know that it’s ok to not be ok but with doing the work, we will be ok once again.
